What made you decide to make music a career path? Has music always been a passion of yours?
Yes, music has been a huge part of my life since I can remember. Growing up, my family had a Yamaha keyboard that I would play. Then I moved on to guitar, bass, drums, anything I could get my hands on. It’s always been a no-brainer, even if I had never discovered Ableton, I would still be writing songs on guitar, or rapping. I’m just obsessed with music, and the fans reaction makes it all worth it.
Control is a unique name for a DJ/producer as you are in ‘control’ of the crowd for long periods of time. What made you chose Control as your handle?
Thanks! I chose the name because I want my project to convey the things in this world that have the most control over an individual. Music is such a powerful thing, it can control our minds, in a way, just like you touched on. It can affect your mood, take your back to a specific time or place, make your psychically move your body, bring people together, it’s really special. So because of that, musicians have a real responsibility. I want every track I make to entice real emotion from people.
Alright now let’s get into this new track ‘The Ritual’ that released August 29th on Warpaint Records. How did the production/concept for this track come about? What can fans expect from this track?
I wrote this track from the perspective of someone that has a drug problem. It’s like drugs in our culture have become the modern day ritual. I really wanted to paint a picture a set a tone with this one. Fans can expect more of my signature rapping and twisted sound design.
Hailing from Los Angeles can you tell us what the bass scene is currently like out West?
L.A. is definitely the place to be for any sort of underground bass music. There are so many hard working groups of people out here, all very talented and co-existing under one huge roof. You can really find anything here, any form of electronic music has a night. There is just a fantastic energy that you really can’t get anywhere else.
If you had the chance to collaborate with any current artist, who would it be and why?
Oooooh, that’s a toughie. I would love to collaborate with Rezz, or Woolymammoth. I love people who make weird music. You gotta do it in such a way though, that allows people to dance still. I think they do a beautiful job of that.
What is one piece of advice you would give a young up and coming DJ/producer?
Not every session is going to be an absolute winner. Play around and experiment, and you will start to form your own unique sound.
The 4th quarter of 2016 is slowly approaching, what do you has in store for fans to close out the year? Any East Coast tour or shows?
I’ve got some awesome free releases lined up, as well as an EP. This EP will showcase a little bit softer side of Control. I’ve also got another joint EP with someone from the Warpaint roster, but we’ll announce that when the time comes. Also be on the lookout for some sick remixes to “The Ritual”! Nothing planned for the East Coast, but I’m working on playing more shows in L.A. and nationally. “Like” my artist page on Facebook for more updates!
