Playa Del Carmen Bans Electronic Festivals After BPM Shooting
In the wake of Monday’s Blue Parrot shooting during BPM Festival’s closing day that left five dead and fifteen injured, the mayor of Playa Del Carmen Cristina Torres Gómez has announced an end to all electronic festivals in the region. “We want these types of events to go,” Torres Gómez said in a press conference on Monday. “We won’t allow one more.”
If Torres Gómez follows through on her promise, it will mark an end to the award-winning festival which was entering its 10th year. In addition, the previously scheduled Arena Festival set to take place in February in Playa Del Carmen has also been cancelled.
It is widely speculated that local cartels were behind Monday’s violence. While the powerful Zetas cartel have operated in the region with impunity for years, it remains unclear if they had perpetrated the massacre.
On Monday, Mexican officials released a list of the dead, which included two Mexicans, one Canadian, one Italian, and an 18-year-old teenager from Denver, CO.
