After first getting noticed by Fedde Le Grand in 2007, Marlon Flohr and Ralph Van Hilst, better known as Bassjackers, have rapidly risen in the ranks. Their 2011 hit “Mush Mush” was their first signal to the EDM world that there was some fresh talent on the scene. In 2013, Bassjackers dropped “Hey!” with Showtek and “Grid” with Dyro and proved to fellow DJs and fans that they were here to stay. 2014 looks like another big year for the Bassjackers. Recently Sonic Agenda got to speak with them about their success, their upcoming tour, the current state of electronic dance music, and much more.
You guys have been friends for quite some time now, how did Bassjackers start?
Ralph was always playing around with sounds on the computer, whereas Marlon started DJ’ing at one point. Being friends already it came quite naturally that we both sat down and went on trying to make a cool track that Marlon could play. Beat Cut was the first of many, and the rest is history.
2014 has been a huge year for you guys with hits such as “Crackin”, “Like That”, and “Derp”. What has this insane year been like for you?
It’s been unreal! It’s so cool to see so many people are digging your music, and the intensity of the fans at gigs when they hear our songs is amazing!
Speaking of “Crackin”, how was it to work with Martin Garrix? Seems like you guys had a blast filming the video.
Martin Garrix has been a friend for a long time now, and working with him is always fun. He’s so talented and his enthusiasm is amazing. The video was shot in both our studio’s and during Future Music Festival in Australia. He’s really a cool down to earth guy, and always in for a laugh. And so are we, so we had genuine fun!
You’re about to embark on the “X” tour with Dyro. Tell us about this tour? What can the fans expected from this tour?
We just embarked on the “X” Tour, and the first shows were really cool! WIth Dyro on board the tour is about offering the best music, from his world and ours. It’s about having fun and not knowing what to expect, hence the “X” 😉 We have several guerrilla actions planned next to the shows, like showing up somewhere random and just start playing music. Also unexpected meet and greets, where everybody can come and take “Xelfies”. Just keep looking out for an “X” near the venue and you know something is up!
Your latest track “Savior” is currently #16 on Beatport and has already gotten support from Hardwell, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Nicky Romero, and many more. This would be your 5th hit this year. How did you come about the production for this track?
Right now we’re actually number 2!!! And this might be our biggest hit so far! We’re extremely happy 🙂 Producing this started with the melody, Ralph wrote it and just knew it was special! And our 5th Beatport top 10 this year, that’s so special. That’s Garrix, Guetta & Hardwell level! We’re really proud of that.
EDM critics cite that the genre is becoming increasingly generic, with many Beatport Top 100 tracks falling into a sort of bigroom “template” geared towards commercial success but lacking in creativity. What are your thoughts on the current state of EDM and where it’s going?
We can follow that criticism up to a point. When we check our inbox for promo’s it’s much of the same. Whether it’s bigroom, future house, deep house or trap! 99% of the tracks are bad copies of an existing hit! But on the other hand, good music has always been scarce!! And in those piles of generic tracks, there are always gems! So in that way the music industry is still the same, but since the internet it’s easier to complain 😉
What are your favorite five tracks out right now?
What’s one thing that the fans don’t know about Bassjackers?
We love Frikandellen!! What, you asks? Just google it 😉
